Fisher provides more than a stress ball for students

At the beginning of a new school year, stress may seem to be inevitable. However the stress free activities and resources provided at Fisher may also be unavoidable.

According to the American Psychological Association website, “school is the top source of stress for teens.” Sophomore Julia Detmer and freshman Ali Zahid mentioned several stressors strictly related to school and said that other personal factors didn’t cause stress.

Detmer said the inability to connect with or understand a professor can be stressful. Additionally, “getting a bad grade on like a test or a paper and the future student debt” contribute to the pressures she feels.

Fisher offers numerous services to students through the Health and Wellness Center, student run organizations and other academic outlets.

For example, the Writing Center, Math Center, Smarthinking Online Tutoring (which can be accessed through mySJFC) and peer tutors are available to provide students with academic guidance.

The Writing Center and Math Center are located in the Golisano Gateway on the top floor. To schedule a peer mentor, a student must fill out a tutor request form at the following link

The Health and Wellness Center is also hosting a workshop on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 12:30 p.m. in Nursing Room 102 that will help students identify and cope with stress.

For some, stress is personal and can be addressed in different ways.

Zahid said, “I like running. I think exercise is a good way to get rid of some stress.”

Food trucks, therapy animals, activities in specific dormitory halls and entertainment shows are also provided by student groups on campus to help facilitate a stress free environment.
