The new Netflix original series The End of the F***ing World is becoming a smash hit. This British comedy has received 8.4/10 stars on IMDb and a 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
While the plot line is very dark and tiptoes on crossing the line of insanity, the comic relief adds a good balance to this eight episode series. Each show is about 25 minutes long, so a viewer can watch the entire season in less than four hours. Even though the episodes are short, you won’t itch for more because each scene is full of action.
James (Alex Lawther), the main character, is initially portrayed similar to a serial killer. He pretends to fall in love with Alyssa (Jessica Barden), another main character, so he can eventually kill her. In the beginning of the series James struggles to find the right time to murder her, but can’t seem to find the perfect opportunity.
The two main characters embark on a destructive journey. It all starts with James punching his dad in the face and stealing his car. Both James and Alyssa seem to have different motives for initially embarking on this trip, but as events take place and an inevitable murder occurs, plans and motives begin to change.
Another aspect that makes this series so dynamic is the substory that occurs between the two officers, Teri Darego (Wunmi Mosaku) and Eunice Noon (Gemma Whelan). The officers chase Alyssa and James but it reveals something about the duo that exposes their character.
The viewer is intrigued to watch not only the action packed moments, but also character developments and backstories. Each show draws the viewer in through monumental events that shape each character’s life and inevitably their personality. The series also depicts major character developments and by the end you might be surprised at the characters you are rooting for.
Overall this series is a new, interesting and dark comedy that will leave you wanting more. The surprising twists and turns and constant action give the viewer exactly what they didn’t know they wanted. While this may not be a Nicholas Sparks love story, it has its moments. So if you want a chick flick with action, adventure, comedy and maybe a little murder, this series is the perfect fit.
