Baseball dominates Canton

The St. John Fisher College baseball team improved its overall record to 17-9 after it took down Canton 25-4 on April 18.

Tim Geissel took the mound to start for the Cardinals and picked up his fourth win of the season. He pitched five innings and gave up four runs and three earned runs.

The Cardinals’ offense was strong right out of the gate as they scored 11 runs in just the first two innings. Going into the third, Geissel gave up three runs but that wasn’t stopping Fisher as they continued to round the bases. The final score turned out to be a blowout, 25-4.

They will return to the field April 21 in a conference doubleheader matchup against Utica College. The first pitch will be at 1 p.m.

Women’s lacrosse takes down Fredonia

The St. John Fisher women’s lacrosse team took down Fredonia 18-3 on April 18 in a non-conference matchup.

Fisher came out of the gate with some strong offense. Fisher went up as many as 11-0 in the first half. As time ticked on the scoreboard, Fredonia finally answered with a goal from Casey Villagomez.

Claire Bollin led Fisher with three goals of her own. Alyssa Sabotka, Morgan Young, Mallory Eymer, Mary-Grace Doyle and Allison Ruppe also contributed with two goals each.

With the win, Fisher is 10-2 on the season and Fredonia dropped to 0-12 overall.

The women’s next game is on April 20 against SUNY Geneseo. The game will be at Growney Stadium at 5:30 p.m.

Andrew Rosso nets his 100th career goal with a win against Nazareth

The St. John Fisher College men’s lacrosse team defeated Nazareth College 11-8 on April 18.

Nazareth got on the scoreboard first, but Fisher wouldn’t back down. Being down as much as 3-1, the Cardinals continued to battle as they scored four straight goals with help from Andrew Rosso. At the end of the first quarter, Fisher was ahead 4-3.

The second quarter was back and forth as both teams shared goals. Rosso found the net again as he gave the Cardinals an 8-6 lead at half.

The Cardinals took over in the second half and won the game. Andrew Rosso lead the game with four goals along with his 100th career goal coming in a rivalry game.

Fisher will try to continue its two-game win streak as they travel down to Houghton on April 21 at 1 p.m.

Make it eight straight Empire 8 championships for Men’s Golf

The St. John Fisher men’s golf team captured its eighth conference championship in a row on April 15.

Fisher finished with a score of 636 (+68) in the two day event, which was hosted at the Hershey County Club East Course.  

Fisher was led by Nicholas Calabrese, Christopher Thompson and Christopher Fritch. Calabrese finished first after scoring an 82 (+11). Thompson came in fourth while Fritch finished second place overall.

With this year’s championship, Fisher has won the conference championship a total of 15 times, along with winning eight in a row.

The team has been awarded an automatic bid into this year’s NCAA division III Men’s Golf Championship.

The men will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina and compete at the NCAA Tournament on May 15.
