Cardinal Men’s Sports Round-Up Sept. 10-16

    The+mens+soccer+team+is+off+to+a+slow+start+this+season+with+an+0-6-1+record.
    The men’s soccer team is off to a slow start this season with an 0-6-1 record.

    Soccer

    Fisher’s men’s soccer team traveled to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles where they were defeated 4-1  in a non-conference matchup on Sept. 12.  The Cardinals finally scored a goal with junior midfielder Joe Balls notching his first on the season in the final minutes of the game.

    On Sept. 15, Fisher was back at home and lost 3-0 to Empire 8 member Stevens College from New Jersey. Finally on Sept. 18, the Cardinals tied 1-1 with D’Youville College of Buffalo and are now 0-6-1 overall (0-1 in the Empire 8). Freshman Justin Bonetto scored the Fisher goal against D’Youville.

    Golf

    St. John Fisher finished the Empire 8 Men’s Division III Fall Golf Championship on Sept.16. in second place behind SUNY Oswego, in a tournament played at Timber Banks course in Phoenix, New York. The Cardinals have won the last eight championships and have 15 championships overall.

    They will be shooting for number nine (and 16 overall) along with the championship for the Empire 8’s automatic berth into the NCAA Men’s Division III Tournament as it will be decided later in April. The team also has three more tournaments on the schedule from now to early October.

    Cross Country

    The Fisher men’s cross-country team ran in the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invite on Sept. 15 at Genesee Valley Park. The Cardinals finished seventh with 263 total team points. Individually, junior Bernard Daoust was Fisher’s top finisher, completing the 8K course in 27:58, good for 36th place overall.

    Three freshmen — Grant Stokoe (28:46), David Ware (29:07) and Cesar Guzman (29:14) — were the next three Fisher runners to finish.

    Hunter Phinney of the host UR team finished first overall with a time of 26:35.
