Women’s sports roundup to Oct. 21

Field hockey

The field hockey team has reeled off five wins in a row to raise its record to 13-4 overall, and 6-1 in the Empire 8.

The victories included a 7-2 decision against Nazareth on Oct. 24, led by Lauren Fazio’s hat trick. Other scores were:

  • 3-2 over Stevens on Oct. 20, with Fazio netting two of the scores.
  • 5-1 at Brockport on Oct. 17, with Bre Socker posting a hat trick plus an assist.
  • 4-1 at Oswego on Oct. 13, led by Kelly Bergamo’s two goals.
  • 9-0 over Sage on Oct. 12, featuring four goals by Fazio and two from Socker.

The Cards close out the regular season on Saturday Oct. 27 on the road at Hartwick.

Cross Country

The St. John Fisher women’s cross-country team finished seventh out of 12 teams at the Highlander Invitational in Houghton on Oct. 6, and 30th (out of 39) at the Inter-Regional Border Battle in Glassboro, NJ.

Junior Gabriella Dunkelberg had the Cardinals’ best time in Houghton, finishing 15th overall with a time of 26:50.8, and was the Cards’ second-best finisher in Glassboro.

The team’s next action is the Empire 8 championship on Saturday Oct. 27


The women’s golf team finished its fall season with a first-place finish in the Nazareth Fall Invitational Oct. 13 and 14 at Irondequoit Country Club. Emily Schultz was the tournament’s top finisher at +33 while teammate Maggie Lesch finished second at +36.

The team also finished fourth in the Empire 8 championship in Ballston Spa Oct. 6 and 7. Schultz was again Fisher’s top performer as she finished tied for 15th place at 184.


With one game left to play in the season, the women’s soccer team has posted a record of 6-6-3 overall and 2-3-2 in conference play. Recent results include shutout losses to Utica, Alfred and Fredonia, and a scoreless tie with Nazareth,

Carli Kovarik

The team posted wins over Hartwick 2-1 at home on Oct. 6, behind two goals by Carli Kovarik. A 3-1 win over The Sage Colleges at home on Oct. 13 included another goal by Kovarik, as well as scores by Tara Marcello and Shiane Irwin.

The season closes out on Saturday Oct. 27 at home against Elmira on Senior Day, followed by the Empire 8 championship on Nov. 2.


The women’s tennis team finished its season with a 5-0 road loss to Stevens in the Empire 8 championship Oct. 12.

The team also posted a forfeit win over Hartwick on Oct. 6 and a 6-3 loss to rival Nazareth on Oct. 2 to post an overall record of 8-3.


With three meets left to play (plus the Empire 8 championship) the women’s volleyball team’s record stands at 15-14 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

The team reeled off four straight match wins, losing only one set in the process, earlier in October with a 3-0 win over Utica Oct. 3, 3-0 over Alfred and 3-1 over Sage Oct. 6 in a dual match at Sage in Troy, and 3-0 over Buffalo State at home on Oct. 9.

Those wins were followed by three straight 3-0 losses to Oswego, Oneonta and Union in the Oswego Invitational Oct. 12 and 13.

A conference-play dual match at home Oct. 20 yielded a split result with a loss to Stevens and a win over Elmira. A Senior Day home match against Cortland ended with another 3-0 loss.

The season will end with the RIT invitational this weekend (Oct. 26-27) and the E-8 championship Nov. 3 at Stevens in Hoboken, NJ.
