Sports roundup through Nov. 4

The St. John Fisher Cardinals picked up their second win on the season, upsetting the Alfred University Saxons 28-14 on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Yunevich Stadium.

Quarterback Alejandro Utset finished 14 of 30 with two touchdowns and one interception, and is 2-0 in career starts. Defensive back Demarre Nelson had two interceptions, including a pick six in the second quarter to put the Cards up 14-7. Nelson also earned his second athlete of the week selection. The Cardinals improve to 2-6 overall (2-4 in the Empire 8) heading into the final game against Buffalo State on Saturday Nov. 10.


The Cardinal men’s and women’s soccer team had their seasons come to an end. The men lost 5-0 to number one seeded Stevens and finished 4-11-2, while the women did not make the Empire 8 season, but finished with a winning record at 7-6-3.

Both teams will now head into the off-season as they will try to make it farther in the Empire 8 championship or possibly win it and advance to the 2019 NCAA Division 3 tournament.

Field Hockey

Fisher field hockey lost in the Empire 8 championship game 1-0 to Washington and Jefferson on Saturday Nov. 3.  Goalie Ashley Maynard made six saves on seven shots and was selected athlete of the week.

The women advanced to the championship game with a 4-1 win over host and No. 1 seed Stevens on Friday Nov. 2. Bre Socker, Reghan Amoroso, Lauren Fazio and Gianna Palma each tallied a goal.

The women finished 15-5 overall, and will head into the offseason with the goal of winning the Empire 8 next year and making the NCAA tournament.
