The St. John Fisher College men’s basketball team played nationally ranked University of Rochester Dec. 6 on Bobby Wanzer Court in the opening round of the Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. The game ended in an overtime thriller with U of R taking the win 86-82.
Both teams started out strong as Fisher was battling to keep up with a powerful No. 17 U of R team. Fisher pulled away at the end of the first half to take lead over Rochester 43-34. At halftime sophomore Matt Asenjo led scoring with 19 points followed by junior Sammy Robinson with 7 points.
Coming out after the break, scoring went back and forth for both teams that led to an intense half. At the 10 minute mark of the second half U of R went on a 13-2 run to make the score 64-61. Fisher didn’t back down; with a little over 3 minutes left in the game, Robinson stepped up and scored the next three baskets for the Cardinals to tie the game 70-70.
Pressure was on with two minutes remaining in the matchup. The Cardinals were able to lock up on defense stopping the Yellowjackets offense. U of R was called for an offensive foul with only 20 seconds remaining in the game. The Cardinals got the ball and called a time out and that’s when Coach Mike Grosodonia drew up a critual play, leading to to Asenjo hitting a 3 pointer for Fisher to lead 73-70.
With only 8 seconds left, Fisher had to get one more stop to seal the game, until they fouled. The Yellowjackets hit both to make it 73-72 with a little under 6 seconds remaining. Rochester fouled Robinson, sending him to the line with a chance to seal the victory. He connected on the first one to make it 74-72 but missed the second. Rochester got the rebound, and threw a hail mary with 4.7 seconds left to tie the game 74-74 at the end of regulation.
At the start of overtime Asenjo scored to give Fisher a two point lead. However, Fisher’s defense couldn’t stop U of R’s offensive sets as they scored the next three trips down. Following that, the Cardinals ran out of gas as the Yellowjackets went on to seal the comeback victory, 86-82.
Robinson was the leading scorer for the Cardinals with 28 points. Asenjo scored a career high of 26 points and 10 rebounds to capture his first career double-double.
Fisher’s record now stands at 3-2 overall while the YellowJackets are undefeated at 8-0. University of Rochester shot 40 percent from 3 point range and 45 percent from the field while Fisher shot 34.5 percent from the 3 point range and 42 percent from the field.
Women’s game results
The Fisher women’s basketball team, meanwhile, also suffered a loss to U of R in a parallel opening matchup of the Crosstown Shootout tournament held among the participating schools’ women’s teams at Nazareth College.
The final score was 61-41. After a close first quarter, a late second-quarter run gave U of R a 10-point halftime lead, which the Yellowjackets built on in the second half.
Sydney Masna led the Cards with 11 points, while Erin Hulbert and Mallory Wood each had 10.
