Football

The Saint John Fisher Cardinals lost to the College of Brockport Golden Eagles in The Courage Bowl XV by a score of 17-0 on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Growney Stadium. Fisher’s offense was shut down the entire game, while the defense held Brockport to no points in the second half after allowing 17 in the first half. 

Fisher has now dropped two games in a row and are sitting at 3-2 overall, and 0-1 in Empire 8 play.

Field Hockey

The Cardinal Field Hockey team was defeated by The University of Rochester Yellow Jackets 4-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Growney Stadium.  Bre Socker scored the lone goal in the loss, coming in the second quarter on a corner shot assisted by Jess Snyder. 

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Cardinals defeated the Hartwick College Hawks  by a score of 3-1 at Growney Stadium. Jess Snyder scored the opening goal of the game, capitalizing on a fast break 16:12 into the first quarter. Alyssa Andres scored her first goal of the season on a rebound shot in the second quarter at 25:56. Bre Socker put the game away late in the fourth quarter on a breakaway beating the goalie to her right side at 50:37. 

Fisher finished its week 1-1 moving to 7-2 overall, and 2-0 in the Empire 8.  

Men’s Cross Country

The Cardinal Men’s Cross Country team placed second overall in the Highlander Invitational, which took place  in Houghton, New York on Saturday, Oct 5.

Sophomore Andrew Ford claimed first place individually, setting a personal best time of 25:32, which was four seconds ahead of the second place runner. Senior Bernard

Daoust finished next for Fisher crossing the line in 10th place, finishing the 8k with a time of 26:14.

Grant Stokoe finished in a solid 13th place with a time of 26:20, and Brandon Nicosia and Bodgan Rozvora finished 34th and 35th. The Cardinals will now travel to Canton, New York to compete in the Ronald C. Hoffman Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Women’s Cross Country

The Fisher Women’s Cross Country team also placed second at the Women’s Highlander Invite in Houghton New York on Saturday, Oct. 5. Riley Corey who was named the Empire 8 runner of the week on Monday, Sep. 30, came in fourth place and shaved 20 seconds off of her personal best with a time of 23:33.

 Gabriella Dunkelberg also decreased her best time, finishing in 10th place clocking in a 23:55, while Taylor Kennard finished 21st with a time of 24:59. Taylor Highers came in 27th place with a time of 25:13, followed by Morgan Gould at 29th with a 25:23. 

The Cardinals, along with the men’s team, will travel to Canton, New York to compete in the Ronald C. Hoffman Invite on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Women’s Golf

The Women’s Golf team competed in the Northeast Women’s Golf Conference Championship in Voorheesville, New York on Sunday, Oct 6. Emily Schultz finished in fourth place individually with a score of 81 on day two, finishing with a score of 170 (+26) for the tournament.

Rounding out for the Cardinals was Gabrielle Papale, finishing with +56, which was good for 23rd place overall. SJFC will head back to Pittsford New York to take on rival Nazareth College at the Naz Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 12, and Sunday, Oct. 13.

Men’s Soccer

The Cardinal Men’s Soccer team tied Houghton College 0-0 in an Empire 8 showdown on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Growney Stadium. Justin Bonetto and Jeff Myers each had three total shots in the contest, while Brennan Brown and Ben Woolingham both had one shot each. 

Goalie Justin Myers in his second start of the year made three saves, and now has a record of 0-1-1 with an .800 save percentage.  Fisher is now 1-8-1 overall, and winless in the Empire 8.

Women’s Soccer

The Fisher Women’s Soccer team defeated Elmira College by a score of 2-0 in an Empire 8 clash in Elmira, New York on Saturday,  Oct. 5. Becky Mack curled a shot into the top corner in the ninth minute to put Fisher up 1-0, while Abigail Dwyer connected on a cross in the 68th minute to seal the game for the Cardinals. 

With the victory, Fisher improves to 4-6-1 overall, and 2-0-1 in the Empire 8.

Women’s Tennis

The Women’s Tennis team earned a berth to the 2019 Empire 8 Women’s Tennis Tournament by beating the Alfred Saxtons 8-1 on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Mendon Pool and Racquet Club. 

The duo of Kali Saffran and Cassidy Bell defeated Alfred’s pairing 8-3 in their first doubles match, while Mikayla Santulli and Zuanna Pociecha defeated Lauren Boshart/Kailey Reyes 8-2 in second doubles. In first singles, Kali Saffran beat Tori Pelligrino two sets to love, (6-1, 6-1), while Cassidy Bell lost to Lauren Boshart two sets to love (4-6, 2-6). 

The team is now 6-3 overall, but will sport an undefeated conference record heading into the Empire 8 tournament. 

Women’s Volleyball

The SJFC Women’s Volleyball team went 3-0 this week securing wins over Nazareth College, Medaille College and Mount Saint Mary’s College (NY).

Alea Steigerwald had 15 kills for the Cardinals while Lauren Gilbert followed close behind with 11. The Cardinals improve to 14-6 overall, and 3-0 in the Empire 8.
