Student Government Association (SGA) is the representative voice for students on campus, and this year Ian Klenk is stepping in to fill the leadership role of SGA President. Klenk hopes to focus on improving and maintaining the communication and transparency of SGA as a whole. He aims to build a governing structure that allows any student to create real change.

This year, he hopes to encourage more students to attend senate meetings, improve communication between the student senators and their constituents, as well as trying to bring back more student programming to the campus on the weekends. “No community is immune to negative fallouts from COVID,” Klenk said, “Most people on campus don’t know what Fisher was like pre-pandemic.” With the pandemic, extracurricular events took a hit and Klenk hopes SGA can act as a support to bringing the fun back to campus. Part of this, says Klenk, is finding great spaces for students to utilize on campus – and catering to commuter students.

But, first and foremost – Klenk is a student just like the rest of campus; a junior political science and history double major, he comes to Fisher from near Buffalo, NY.

Fun Facts about our SGA President:

  • Favorite show to binge: either The Office or West Wing.
  • President Klenk loves a good nature documentary – especially the “Our Great National Parks” series voiced by former U.S. President Barack Obama.
  • His favorite place to study on campus with people is in the Nest, but if he’s alone he prefers the library or academic buildings.
  • In his incredibly limited free time, Klenk can be found hanging out in the Tepas Commons, going on canalside runs, and reading.
  • Klenk got his start in student government as the Residential Students Senator.
  • Klenk is in fact a Buffalo Bills fan and loves to attend games with his friends.

According to Klenk, his favorite part about being president is “helping other leaders achieve their goals.” “It’s so rewarding being able to help people demonstrate their strength and work through challenges.” Klenk continued.

SGA elections Chair Alyson Witt said that one word she would use to describe Klenk is “passionate.” She describes him as composed, while always balancing his many responsibilities well. “He worked his way up through the positions at SGA and it’s been really nice seeing him grow so much; in both his abilities and confidence.” According to Witt, “[Klenk] is always professional, honest, and always offers himself to help others”.

SGA meetings take place at 6:45 pm on Tuesday evenings in Wilson Formal (across from Safety and Security). Klenk encourages all students to attend the meetings to talk about the things impacting them day to day, communicate with their senators, find out what’s going on around campus, and listen to the speakers that SGA brings in.
