This class will allow students to combine what they have learned in their production classes, internships, and other experiences to produce a professional portfolio piece to use when they enter the job market. Dating back to the students’ introduction to the three stages of production (pre-production, production, and post-production), they now have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and techniques in these areas as they produce this project. Students may wish to work for a client or produce an original video (documentary, movie, music video) that is either fictional or nonfictional. Unlike the other production classes, COMM 487 requires the student to work on his or her own; however, the student is encouraged to assemble a crew (a cameraperson, a director of photography, production assistants, etc.) to help with the production.
The student goals in COMM 487 might include the following:
- to demonstrate mastery in the three stages of video (or film) production
- to construct a schedule that will help the student complete this project
- to work with a professional client and negotiate his/her needs with the student’s own
- to strengthen his or her writing and oral communication skills
